What is a credit building credit card?
A credit building credit card is specifically designed to help people improve their credit score, whether they have a limited credit history or have had credit problems in the past.
It typically comes with a personalised credit limit based on your current situation. You could be offered a lower initial limit to help keep borrowing manageable while you build a track record, which can then grow over time.
How do credit builder cards work?
You get a personalised starting credit limit based on your current circumstances.
Your card provider regularly reports your balance and payments to the UK credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion).
Paying on time and keeping your balance low builds a positive payment history. This shows lenders you can manage credit responsibly.
Over time, that can help improve your credit score and open up more options.
The trade-off is that credit builder cards may have a higher APR than cards for people with strong credit histories. That's why they work best when you clear your balance in full each month.
Who are credit builder credit cards for?
Credit score building cards may be particularly suitable for you if:
You have limited credit history
Credit building cards help establish credit history for those who haven't borrowed much before.
You've had credit problems
Our cards can help rebuild your credit history if you have missed payments, defaults or CCJs.
You recently moved to the UK
Zable helps newcomers to the UK build their credit profile - only 6 months of credit history needed to apply. Learn more about credit cards for new UK residents.
Did you know that more than 5 million UK adults are "credit invisible", with too little credit history for some lenders to score them confidently (according to Experian)? That's why we use Open Banking technology - it helps us gain a fuller picture of your financial circumstances and your ability to repay, rather than relying on a credit file alone.

How to use your credit builder card effectively
Keep spending low
Aim to use no more than 25% of your available credit limit. This shows lenders you're not dependent on credit. For example, if you have a £2,000 limit, aim to keep your usage under £500. This is referred to as your credit utilisation.
Pay on time, every time
Set up automatic payments for at least the minimum payment to ensure you never miss a due date.
Pay more than the minimum when possible
Paying your balance in full each month avoids interest charges and demonstrates good financial management.
Be patient and consistent
Building credit takes time. You should see improvements in your credit score within 6-12 months of responsible use.

"The main benefit of a credit builder card is that it gives you an opportunity to demonstrate a track record of consistent, on-time payments. It's not about borrowing when you don't need to - it's about using credit responsibly and paying it back reliably, month after month. That's what lenders want to see."
